My Space | Corinne Kowal of Emerald Green Interiors

After a refreshing break from my everyday life and responsibilities, I can truly appreciate today’s My Space feature. Corinne Kowal is a colour consultant and authors the blog, Emerald Green Interiors. She has long tooted the benefit of colour in the home, long before the re-emergence of coloured walls and when it was all about “white”. I first admired her elegant decorating style after seeing a feature on her old apartment in Brussels by Holly Marder for Houzz. When she recently packed up her life and relocated to Madrid, I was so excited to see how she would decorate her new environment so after some months of settling in, I asked her if she would be my guest and share a special place in her new home with us. Well, it seems that she went beyond that actually created the space that she longed for! While I never intend to create too much work for my guests, I actually feel good about this one because everyone needs their own little sanctuary and I don’t know about you, but I’d love to curl up in this one right now.

When Mel approached me to be featured on her “My Space” column I immediately thought of shooting our bedroom. There is really no other room in the home that defines better what “my space” is than my bedroom. Before having children I could easily spend an entire rainy day lying in bed reading a novel. Now that we have two small boys this time is unfortunately gone, but the bedroom remains my sanctuary and the place to recharge my batteries.

We relocated six months ago from Brussels to Madrid and I have been busy painting and decorating our new home. You won’t be surprised to hear that the bedroom is more or less one of the last rooms to get my attention. Remember the saying about the shoemaker’s son going barefoot? Well it certainly does apply in this case. Mel’s invitation was therefore the perfect pretext to get things going.

For our house, built in the early seventies, I settled on a palette of greys, light and dark, and greens ranging from Chartreuse to Olive. I toyed with the idea of painting the bedroom a dark greenish blue but finally settled with a beautiful medium grey and absolutely love how it turned out. I am having a simple headboard done in very vintage chartreuse green and ivory hounds-tooth fabric and I can’t wait to get it. In the meantime I accessorized with chartreuse green elements. Together with the grey it fits the house like a glove and even though our art deco nightstands aren’t exactly from the seventies I love them too dearly to replace them in the near future.

Thank you so much Mel for having me here!

…and it does look like a sanctuary: peaceful, relaxed and welcoming. It is essential to keep a space as such in the house, especially with kids ;-)
